You can’t go to Nepal without going on a good ol’ trek! Nepal is considered one of the best places for trekking in the world, and is the home to two of the most popular trekking routes, Annapurna and the infamous Everest. For a shorter trek, try out the lake city of Pokhara.

Nepal is a mecca for the most discerning bird watchers, with over 856 species. Ten per cent of the world’s bird population lives here, so it’s highly likely you’ll glimpse some birds that you won’t find elsewhere!

The Lakes

Lakes in Nepal are renowned for unmatchable beauty, as well as spiritual importance. There are over 200 lakes with glacier origin here, so you really must make it a point to visit as many of them as you can!

The Mountains

Nepal is home to seven of the world’s highest peaks, all reaching more than 20,000 feet. Mountain-climbers the world over will be spoilt for choice with about 64 per cent of Nepal being covered with mountains, including Mount Everest.

This is a must for all tourists. The Kathmandu Valley is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas and is composed of seven Monument Zones. These zones consist of temples and palaces, as well as the oldest Buddhist monument, believed to have been built in third century BC.

The Diverse Cultures

Believe it or not, this relatively small region is home to 35 different ethnic groups. This means you as a tourist, get to immerse yourself in the different languages, religions, music and food! You can learn so much from this unique area of the world, and you’ll be richer for it.

Its Serenity

Regarded as a sacred place for hundreds of years, the tranquillity of Nepal is bound to have positive effects on anyone fortunate enough to experience it. The natives consider the people, buildings and land to be symbols of serenity, making this destination a place where you can really escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Affordability

If you compare hiking trails like Kilimanjaro or the Inca trails, Nepal’s trails are much more affordable. Accommodation is very reasonable – a clean hotel room will only set you back about $20 a night and the cost of food is so low, you can take care of a day’s meals with about $10.

The Hospitality

The Nepalese people have a reputation for being friendly, generous and polite. If you’re ever in need of help, you won’t have to go far to find it!

The Cuisine

Nepalese cuisine is a vibrant fusion of South Asian flavours, mainly Chinese and Indian. You can be assured that the food in Nepal is generally healthier than a lot of other cuisines, as they rely heavily on lean meat and vegetables, as well as known healthy ingredients like lentils, yogurt, tomatoes and garlic.

With so many attractions, how could you not want to drop everything and go to Nepal?

Whether you’re into hiking and adventure, or just taking in the sights, this destination has an activity to suite people of all ages. Add the benefits of the nation’s tranquil reputation, and you’ve got yourself the perfect location to unwind and come back refreshed!

    Lovely photos of Nepal.

Tom, did you climb up on the Himalaya?

Tom, I’m in the early early (very early) stages of planning a RTW trip, and I’ve got to say that I think you might have convinced me to include Nepal in my plans! After a European backpacking trip that included many stops in capitols/big cities, I’ve realized how important it is (for me)to include destinations that are natural and tranquil, especially since I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking. Speaking of my European backpacking trip…I couldn’t have planned it without your help. Your blog was the first one I found! I’ll forever be grateful to you.

The best reason for me is always the food. I have heard great things about it.
